Derek Ansell was born in North London but spent time working and living in Lancashire before moving to Newbury, Berkshire where he now resides. He has worked as a Sales Representative and Area Manager for office equipment and chemist sundries companies and is a long- time contributor to Jazz Journal, a jazz magazine founded in 1948. He also writes regularly for a Berkshire weekly newspaper, reviews of concert, club and festival music and theatre presentations, both professional and amateur. He has published two novels in the past ten years and two biographies of jazz musicians, the first came out in 2008 and the second in 2013.
Comedian, a murder mystery, was published through Blossom Spring Publishing in 2020.
